Music continues to be an important part of worship at Christ Church. But music is not static – it responds to need and tastes, which continuously evolve with each new generation. Christ Church has responded to that challenge by providing both traditional choral and modern band music, led by choir director and organist David Williams and band leader Dan Allsopp. We celebrate the rich musical heritage of our faith, past present and future; from 400 year-old choral works to the latest worship songs, meditative chants to rousing anthems and everything in between! Our bells ring out each week to call the Parish to worship.
Christ Church Choir sings at most Sunday morning services, which start at 10am and at some evening services, held on the 4th Sunday of the month. We also sing at weddings and funerals, when requested. We sing in harmony, but as with so many small choirs, we have few men (unlike our 1885 black and white picture), so we focus on 3-part (sopranos, altos and men) choral music - at least until we can recruit a tenor or two to add the 4th vocal part. So we are always looking out for new choir members to join us – especially altos and men. If you enjoy singing and would like to join a friendly, non-auditioned group of singers, then please come along and try us out. Practices are Thursday nights from 7:45pm and there is a quick refresher practice each Sunday morning at 9.30.
Don’t worry if you don’t have recent singing experience or cannot read music – we can help you in an enjoyable and easy way. We have our own choir website (click here) where sound files of all our upcoming anthems are posted, so that you can listen and practise your vocal part, at home. You can also listen to past recordings of some of our choral music (click here).

The contemporary worship band at Christ Church is based on a team of two lead vocalists backed by an acoustic guitar led rhythm section. This is augmented with trumpet and electric guitar and additional vocalists depending on repertoire played. Guest musicians are sometimes invited to join for special events.
The musicians in the band have varied stylistic backgrounds, and this means that there can be flavours of acoustic rock, folk, and world music in the arrangements and treatment of the songs, examples of which are shown in the playlist:
Some of the musicians are also writers of worship music, and these compositions form part of the band repertoire and worship at Christ Church.
We are blessed with an easy-to-ring set of eight bells, which were cast in 1991 at the famous Whitechapel Bell Foundry and then hung in Christ Church in 1992 in the existing oak frame. The largest bell, the tenor weighs 8½ cwt and like the rest all have their own individual inscription.
Our bells are rung regularly by a friendly and committed band of all ages and backgrounds. If you would like to learn more about this ancient art or join our band, please get in touch and come along.
