GREEN FINGERED?
A short note from Rosie Wood
Improving Christ Church’s Garden
Dear all,
I’d like to let you know that I have decided to try and improve the way the church garden looks, as brambles, ivy and weeds seem to be taking over in many parts of what could be an attractive garden.
Throughout last autumn and winter, I have been clearing the ground adjacent to the car park, and with the PCC’s agreement have asked for a small budget to spend on creating some flower beds. I’m starting by adding plenty of organic matter (horse poo to be precise!), and have now begun to plant dahlias, cosmos, calendula, gallardia... and whatever else I can lay my hands on from my own garden.
This project will take a long time — the garden has been neglected for quite a while, but year by year I think we can transform it into something of which we can all be proud... and that’s where you come in.
In order to populate the garden, we’ll need LOTS of plant donations! This email is therefore a request for your help, if you feel able. There are several ways in which you might contribute:
- We’ll need some rose bushes — as little as £6.99 at Chessington Garden Centre. The next time you’re there to stock your own garden, please think of Christ Church and pop an extra item in your trolley.
- Shrubs – various ... be adventurous!
- For those seeking a real bargain, I noticed today that Wilkinson’s have reduced many of their boxed plants (e.g. dahlias, phlox etc) to half price... as little as 70p an item.
- As you organise your own garden for the summer, perhaps there is a plant that you no longer want, or you have grown too many bedding plants for your needs — I’d love to have them all for this project.
- For those wanting to make a bigger statement – we will probably have room for a fruit tree or two — and planting a tree can be a lovely way to remember a departed loved one.
These are just a few ideas to start you thinking, but I’d welcome any suggestions you might have. If you feel able to help in any way, please do call me on 01372 72 72 97. You are welcome to call at my home and/or leave plants on my doorstep any time.
Thanks in advance for your help, and let’s look forward to a bit more colour in our lives!

Help urgently
needed…
…”When I first helped with the church cleaning, there
was a different team of about FIVE people each week. Now there are just ONE
or TWO people each time! Not all the cleaning is done at 9.30 on a Friday.
Two ladies always do theirs on a Saturday morning, while a gentleman usually
cleans a bit later on a Thursday. Exercise is good for you! Hoovering and
sweeping the church is much cheaper than going to the gym and not nearly as
unpleasant as jogging in driving rain. If you think you may be able to help,
please leave a note in my pigeon hole or ring 723301. Patience
Jam jars and knitting wool…
…Avril Shipton would like empty jars with lids to fill with home-made jam to
raise funds for CBC University of Life, also wool to make Teddies for
Tragedies – these are sent out in bulk to disaster areas all over the world.
Please bring on a Sunday, or Avril (812175) will collect. Thank you
Publicity...
...Our new Publicity Officer, Denise Chamberlain, would like to hear about
your Christ Church/CCWells stories and events. She would also like to hear
from people who would be willing to help with posters and notice boards, so
please call 727240 or email her at pauldchamberlain@btinternet.com

Fed up with all the unwanted post you receive? Apart from contacting the Mail Preference Service ( www.mpsonline.org.uk or 0845 703 4599) to have your name and address removed from the lists
which the direct mail industry uses, you can also contact the Royal
Mail Door-to-Door Opt-Out Scheme (email optout@royalmail.com or write to Door to Door Opt Outs, Royal Mail, Kingsmead House, Oxpens
Road, OXFORD, OX1 1RX - no phone number!). This will stop the Royal
Mail delivering unaddressed mail - mail that does not have the
recipient's address on it. (Beware: that might include some leaflets
from central or local government!) Another way to help save the planet!
