Amos Trust is a small Christian charity based in London which was founded by the Rev Canon Garth Hewitt 25 years ago. It supports work with the marginalised in different parts of the world and the name is derived from Amos, the Old Testament Prophet who was concerned for justice (Amos 5.24 “.... let justice roll down like water and righteousness like an ever flowing stream.”) In September 09 we were privileged to visit one such project in South Africa. Umthombo (U) work to support children living on the streets of Durban. They run a nutrition programme which provides three meals a day and aim to give children back their self respect by teaching them football, surfing and many other activities. They have 4 professional social workers. The Senior Social Worker used to work for the local authority in Durban and has very useful contacts. With professional people on board, the local Government is now taking notice of their success rate in returning children to their families but there is still no official funding at present Just before our visit they acquired larger premises and are now open at night which means they can provide a safe temporary place for the children to sleep. This has made an enormous difference to the children but does mean that they need a much larger income to sustain this.” In March 2010 a Street Child World Cup took place in Durban where young people living on the streets around the world were able to show off their football skills. This tournament was won by India. Around this event there was also a conference where street children were able to voice their concerns and be heard. This has led to the launch of the Durban Declaration – see latest news.
